Tv Drama Generic Conventions

Characters – even particular kinds of characters: eg, at its most
simple, ‘good’ and ‘bad’ characters.
Stories – they all tell stories, whether those stories involve
adventure, crime or romance and they often, but not always, end
happily.
The stories are told against familiar backdrops: – eg, homes,
police stations and offices (for crime dramas), hospitals (for
medical dramas) – most of which are created in studios. However,
most dramas also use outside locations to create particular
effects.
Camerawork – particular kinds of shots are used: eg, sequences
involving establishing shots followed by mid-shots of characters,
shot/reverse shots to show character interaction and, in particular,
close-ups to show the characters’ emotions.
Stories use dialogue to tell the stories. Occasionally, monologues
are built in (as voiceovers, a character telling a story).
Music is used to punctuate the action, create effects (suspense,
tension) and underline emotional moments.
Particular subgenres tend to have items which make them
immediately identifiable – police cars, blue lights, operating
theatres and scalpels, triage/reception areas in hospitals. Icons of
the genre, they symbolise the (sub)genre.

Magazine Evaluation

For the photoshop development i worked on my own as i had already used photoshop and knew that is very hard to share as everyone has different ideas.

I planned my magazine on paper and gave it a very structured layout which i based on previous playstation magazines which i used to read and always found them easy to read and understand.

i used the camera to capture images and then firewire to upload the pictures on to pc and finally edited on adobe photoshop, to create the magazine.

My magazine kept to the rule of three to keep it looking professional and consitant. i think the three colours are also clear and fresh.

My magazine appeals to most regular reads of the school magazine as it covers the topics that most students are interested in. it also has quite bold layout and not overpowering like more sophisiticated magazines.

Film Evaluation

I worked with Jamie Webster, Emma Dimelow and Becky Baker to create my preliminary task of a short film production. We split the four of up into two small sectors, myself and jamie on acting with a few camera shot ideas, then Emma & Becky controling the cameras movement.

Are main planning was from are storyboard which we created first before we started to film, this took us half a lesson of planning and we kept to the basic guildlines. The short film we created has quite a mysterious feel and i think we were inspired from the jason bourne series of films.

The technology we used was the camera and tripod then the editing from the apple macs, imovie, to crop all clips together and smoothen the transistion.

The factors we looked at were the camera angles such as when i step over the camera. We also looked at lighting in the room we used, we thought it was to bright and decided to shut the blinds and change were the location of the tables were.

We looked at alot of camera effects, such as the 180 degree rule, we had a very good few angles on the finishing handshake which gave our film a good look of professional quality.

The mise en scene on are film was well thought through, we used the camera bag to act that it held some information that was of high importance. We also gave the room a very dark setting as this gives a more secretive feel to the audience, which fits with are formal functions of are genre.

We gave our film a sense of story with two main characters consiting of a henchmen, and a important figure with high hierarchy. This links into the barthez theory of structalism as one event leads to another.

I feel that are film went very well, it was very smoothly put together with good editing. I was very pleased with who i worked with as we all had a serious frame of mind and knew what we had to create. The one thing i would want to improve was the music, as we feel it didnt really need a cheesy track as we feel it would ruin the overall film.

I think this has helped me be inspired for my coursework piece, it gives me a idea of what i can create and in what time frame.

Photoshop development

We have been set a task to produce a front cover of a magazine for the school. It had to be relevant to students and could be aimed at just sport, just studies or wider and for all.

I decided to keep mine wide as then i could find it easier to fill with ideas. We had to keep to guildlines such as the rule of three colours to keep it looking professional and tidy. I choose to keep to blue, green, black and dark grey. i think this worked well and im happy with my overall front cover and my contents page.

I shall upload the two pictures onto my blog so you to see.

Garage Band

We have been using the Apple Macs at school recently, once we had edited are short film clips we needed some kind of soundtrack. To do this we used the software- garage band, which is a program with ready made beats and ryhmes that we could adapt and remix to create are own soundtrack. Once we had done this we had to had it to are film, we have a slightly misterious figure so we needed a dark and slow sound which i think we created well.

i think that garage band is very 'cheesey' and i would have much preferred to use a ready made soundtrack, but we didnt have permission as it would collide with copyright issues. Infuture i think i shall browse the no copyright issue tracks as i think they will be of a higher quality, and give our video a better overall finish.

Filming and Editing

I have been currently filming with Jamie, Emma and Becky. We had to create a short film of somebody walking to a room then entering and sitting down.

We thought we could add something different to this, we had me walking down the hallways and seemingly searching for a certain room, once i had found the room we filmed all different angles and when in the editing suite we picked the one that would work the best. i entered then was greeted by Jamie who was playing the role of a important business type man. We discussed a issue then shock hands and the film faded out.

I think we worked very well as a team, we filmed some really unique angles with the camera and i think the editing went very well as we seem to have a fast tempo clips of action and a good mix of scene timings.

First Blog

In Media Studies i have created a short video for my practical lesson.

We had to create a variety of shots with the camera, i filmed with jamie, josh and wez. We all were happy with are end result, and decided to edit are clips separately, so my finished product was mine and jamies edit of are footage.

What i think went well was are filming, we all had a clear understanding of what had to be filmed as we created a high quality story board which we found was easy to work through, which made are clips successful.

What i think was not to successful was are editing, as we had such a short amount of time, i would have liked to spend more time on the clips and get a better quality finish on each like edit and have smoother transitions.
